چکیده

Traditional motor primitive approaches deal largely with open-loop policies which can only deal with small perturbations. In this paper, we present a new type of motor primitive policies which serve as closed-loop policies together with an appropriate learning algorithm. Our new motor primitives are an augmented version version of the dynamical system-based motor primitives [6] that incorporates perceptual coupling to external variables. We show that these motor primitives can perform complex tasks such as Ball-in-a-Cup or Kendama task even with large variances in the initial conditions where a skilled human player would be challenged. We initialize the open-loop policies by imitation learning and the perceptual coupling with a handcrafted solution. We first improve the open-loop policies and subsequently the perceptual coupling using a novel reinforcement learning method which is particularly well-suited for dynamical system-based motor primitives.

Reinforcement Learning for Parameterized Motor Primitives [IJCNN1759]

One of the major challenges in both action generation for robotics and in the understanding of human motor control is to learn the “building blocks of movement generation”, called motor primitives. Motor primitives, as used in this paper, are parameterized control policies such as splines or nonlinear differential equations with desired attractor properties. While a lot of progress has been mad...

Learning Motor Skills: From Algorithms to Robot Experiments

Ever since the word “robot” was introduced to the English language by Karel Čapek’s play “Rossum’s Universal Robots” in 1921, robots have been expected to become part of our daily lives. In recent years, robots such as autonomous vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, and window cleaners, as well as a huge number of toys have been made commercially available. However, a lot of additional research is req...

Is imitation learning the route to humanoid robots?

This review investigates two recent developments in artificial intelligence and neural computation: learning from imitation and the development of humanoid robots. It is postulated that the study of imitation learning offers a promising route to gain new insights into mechanisms of perceptual motor control that could ultimately lead to the creation of autonomous humanoid robots. Imitation learn...

Guest editorial: Special issue on robot learning, Part A

Creating autonomous robots that can assist humans in unpredictable situations of daily life has been a long standing vision of robotics, artificial intelligence, and the cognitive sciences. With the current rise of physical humanoid and other highly mechanically capable robots in robotics research labs around the globe, we have come a step closer to this aim. Thus, it has become essential to cr...
